Hello everyone,
Welcome to the first Head teacher blog post - A bitter sweet feeling, since it may also be the last one from me!
Our next head teacher will also keep you up to date with all goings on in Whitecrook School and we wish that person well, once they are appointed.
Staff Training
In the month of January, the staff were very busy with staff training. Mrs Martin and Miss McGill attended training on the new National Standardised Assessments, which all P1, P4 and P7 pupils will complete for the first time in March. This exciting way of tracking children's progress is part of the National Improvement strategy and will assess children's progress across Numeracy & Mathematics and Literacy & English.
Mrs Loh and Miss Ellis continue their Incredible Years training. This training has been ongoing since the beginning of the school year and enhances our Pupil Equity Plan. The staff training goes alongside Parent Groups also running in Whitecrook on a Tuesday evening, targeting parents of children aged 3-6.
Miss Lee also completed her play based learning training this month and continues to apply the methodology in her class. All staff across Whitecrook are now trained in Play Based Learning and follow the authority strategy when planning, implementing and evaluating play opportunities.
Parental Involvement
On 19th January I met with some of you at my Tea and a Blether session. It was great to gather your thoughts and suggestions for school improvement.
Since the Tea and a Blether session, we have moved all communication to the school website. This has included sharing curriculum overviews with you for each class. This ensures that you all know what your children are learning about through the course of the term.
The Parent Questionnaire showed that you would like more information about how your child is progressing in their learning. In order to do this, we have shared with you your child's individual targets. The idea is that you will receive one of these termly, so that you can get a feel for what your child is working on at key points in the school year.
Pupil News
This month saw a wonderful Burns' Day Assembly and we thank all of you who were able to join us. The assembly showcased children's learning and was great fun for all involved.
Well done also to the P3/2 pupils who arranged a wonderful Wear it Yellow Day for the Beatson. We were even joined by Bella the Bee on the day and raised over £200 for the Beatson Charity.
This week we are joined by the SSPCA, who will be leading children in learning related to caring for and ensuring animal safety. The SSPCA join us at Whitecrook most years and we enjoy excellent partnership working with them.
On Friday this week professional Graphic Designers and Architects are coming to work with the pupils in P5-7. They will be contributing to the Art Installation planned to cover one external wall of the new Community Sports Hub, where the Rugby Club used to be. We are delighted to be involved in this wonderful project and hope that the children enjoy their experience.
More from the new head teacher next month! In the meantime, it's been wonderful working with you all over the 3 years I have been here.
